The resources on this page were used in professional development for a cohort of teachers using the National Geographic Geo-Inquiry process for the first time.

We'd like to thank National Geographic for the generous grant which made it possible for us to provide these workshops. We'd also like to recognize and thank Adam Dastrup, National Geographic Utah Steward, and Merinda Davis, an Alpine District teacher and National Geographic Fellow with vast experience using the Geo-Inquiry process with her students. Each of these individuals attended our workshops and provided our teachers support.  Leslie Lewis, Digital Learning Specialist for Salt Lake City School District was an great support for our teachers.

Most teachers participated in the National Geographic online Geo-Inquiry course.  In addition, we held we held three full day workshops with teachers. The first two workshops focused on planning for the Geo-Inquiry process, part of which included debriefing the online course. These workshops also included introducing strategies to help scaffold and differentiate learning for students. Power Points and handouts for these two workshops are provided in the links below. We strongly recommend teachers read the books referred to during these workshops.

Our third workshop brought teachers together to share their projects and debrief the process and experience for each teacher, including discussing challenges and how they overcame them.

The resources in the links below include:

  • Power Points. Be sure to read the Notes under each slide for further information.
  • An implementation template to help teachers think through the various phases of the Geo-Inquiry process. This was used in conjunction with the National Geographic Educator Resource Guide.
  • Resource links to great tools to support students in collecting and creating compelling stories about their community issue so they can make their call to action.
  • A sample timeline for providing support
